The Attorney-General has clapped back at the Queensland Police Union President’s criticism of the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce report. 

The report handed down yesterday gave 89 recommendations to reduce the prevalence of domestic violence, one of which called for an inquiry into cultural issues in the police force.

Union President Ian Leavers claimed it was “another woke, out-of-touch report”, and told Neil Breen police are doing the best they can while under-resourced.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Women, and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Shannon Fentiman told Sofie Formica she disagrees with the comments.

“Look, I don’t think you can read those reports and listen to those women’s voices, and call it ‘woke’. I just, I absolutely reject that.

“I understand there are many hard-working police officers right across Queensland, who are working hard every day to save women and girls’ lives, and the report does say that.

“But unfortunately, there are a lot of women who are coming forward and are not getting the appropriate response.”

She added the report was not singling out the Queensland Police Service.

“This is the entire community that needs to stand up if we’re going to successfully eliminated domestic violence and coercive control.

“I absolutely do not think this is any one organisation’s problem or fault – absolutely not.”
