The state’s Attorney-General is seeking legal advice to appeal the sentence handed to the teenager who killed Kate Leadbetter and Matthew Field.

The 18-year-old was this week jailed for 10 years but will be eligible for release after serving six.

The parents of Ms Leadbetter and Mr Field have described the sentencing as “grossly inadequate”.

Senior Nine News reporter Tim Arvier told Neil Breen the government wants to take a “sensible” approach.

“They say they don’t want to appeal unnecessarily … if there are low prospects of getting the appeal upped,” he said.

“However, on this one, I think they’ve got to just because of community outrage.

“I think people are getting a bit sick of these young crims running around, seemingly with no punishment.

“What they risk if they don’t appeal this – sure, they might have low prospects of winning – … it just sets the mood of the public.”
