Attorney-General shuts down ideas of mandatory minimum sentencing
Attorney-General Yvette D’Arth has ruled out using mandatory minimum sentencing, leaving Queenslanders without answers to the growing issue of youth crime.
Yvette D’Arth dismissed the idea of employing mandatory minimum sentencing for common offenses such as car theft and robbery.
Bond University Criminologist and Former Detective, Terry Goldsworthy, told Peter Gleeson on 4BC Drive, “…The first aspect I picked up on was not once in her reply did she mention the word victim, which would pretty much be the approach of this government to some degree, they’re offender-centric…”
“I think mandatory minimum sentencing would address one of the issues we often hear the government complain about, and that is courts being perceived failing doing what community expectations are. I’m a bit perplexed they’re not prepared to consider it…” Mr. Goldsworthy continued.
