Shoppers are being urged to throw a few pineapples in the trolley as a surplus of the tropical fruit hits the Australian market.

The surge of produce is being driven by a mass natural flowering event caused by the weather.

“They like the heat, they don’t like the cold,” Tropical Pines general manager Anthony Dobson explained to Laurel, Gary & Mark.

“The problem is when we get rain, we get lots of overcast days and what’s happened is the plants have started to stress.

“And when they stress, they set fruit because they think they’re going to die, they like to leave something behind.”
