Border re-opening has doctors ‘worried’ as ramping crisis continues
Doctors are calling for urgent action to address Queensland’s ambulance ramping crisis ahead of the state’s reopening.
Australian Medical Association Queensland’s Ramping Roundtable will today release a five-point action plan, calling for 1500 more hospital beds across the state.
It comes four days ahead of the state’s reopening to interstate COVID-19 hotspots, when a surge of infections is expected.
Roundtable Chair Doctor Kim Hansen told Spencer Howson the public health system is already being stretched beyond breaking point.
“Our doctors are worried,” she said. “Our hospitals are at full capacity right now.
“We haven’t had a true COVID surge and we just don’t know how we will manage if there’s more patients coming.”
Dr Hansen said extra support needs to come from multiple levels of government.
“It’s not about blaming anyone in particular; we’re not political.
“We just need more beds, we need more funding and it’s got to come from federal government and state government.”
