Ash Barty shocks tennis world with retirement announcement
World number 1 Ash Barty has announced she will be retiring from tennis.
She shared the shock news on her social media.
“I just had that gut feeling after Wimbledon,” she said.
“There was just a little part of me that wasn’t satisfied.”

Wide World of Sports host Peter Psaltis told Sofie Formica one of Barty’s greatest traits has always been her ability to forge her own path.
“You’ve just got to take your hat off to her because she’s not falling into what others may believe is best for her,” he said.
“She does what she believes is best for herself.
“She will go down as one of our all-time greats.”

Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the state is looking into commemorating Barty’s career with a statue or similar monument.
“I can assure all of your listeners the government has been talking to Ash and her management around a range of things,” he said.
“This announcement today makes those conversations all the more important.”
