Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE has died in hospital on Sunday night, aged 92-years-old.

Sir Nicholas represented the Wallabies 114 times, inducted into the Australian and International Rugby Union Hall of Fame.

He went on to become the 75th Lord Mayor of Sydney in the 1970s before taking over as President of the Australian Rugby Union in the 80s.

His distinguished life of service continued with roles as President of the SBS, as Chairman of the Sydney Cricket and Sportground Trust and as husband and confidant to former NSW Governor Doctor Marie Bashir.

Sir Nicholas and Dame Bashir have three children and six grandchildren together.

Alan Jones has paid tribute to his longtime friend.

“It’s going to leave a hole in the heart of many because people like Nick Shehadie don’t come along very often.”

Ray Hadley was also a mate of Sir Nicholas, reminiscing on his many years knowing the great man.

He speaks with current Chairman of the SCG Trust Tony Shepherd, who expressed his dismay at the loss.

“It’s really put a big dampener on today. We knew he hasn’t been well but when it finally happens it sort of knocks you around a bit.

“He was a terrific bloke and a great mentor to me.”
