Brisbane woman’s bill shock after huge hike to include forced flood cover

A Brisbane woman says she was shocked when she received her home and contents renewal notice, when her insurer had hiked up her premium $5000 from last year.
Karen Kiddy lives in the hilly Brisbane suburb of Paddington, and has never made a flood-related insurance claim.
Despite never flooding, she says she was advised flood coverage is now mandatory.
The insurance company is claiming their postcode has been re-rated due to south-east Queensland’s floods and flood coverage is mandatory.
Last year the premium was $3324, and this year’s premium was $8972.
“When I actually saw that, it certainly got my attention,” she told Scott Emerson.
Ms Kiddy says she was told it’s compulsory to have the flood cover.
“She was telling me all the things [on the phone] and I suppose that was the time I started to get my Karen cranky pants on.”
4BC’s switchboard lit up with other callers saying the same thing.
