British Prime Minister Theresa May has survived a tense leadership spill, brought on by chaotic Brexit negotiations.

Ms May made a last minute plea for stability ahead of a confidence vote by Conservative MPs at 7am (AEDT).

In a defiant speech overnight, Ms May said the challenge to her leadership risks delaying or even stopping Brexit and warned a leadership change would put the country’s future at risk.

Prime Minister May returned to 10 Downing Street to hear the results of the spill, which she comfortably survived.

Yes votes: 200

No votes: 117

Majority: 83

The result means there cannot be another leadership challenge for at least 12 months.

It’s believed many MPs decided to back the Prime Minister after she promised not to run at the 2022 general election.

UK Correspondent Adam Gilchrist predicted the Prime Minister’s survival, but doesn’t believe she will see out her full term.
