Bush jockey shortfall solution ‘just needs some effort from government’
There are renewed calls for a mentorship program to address a bush jockey shortfall in Queensland.
Dozens of horses are scratched from races each month because there aren’t enough jockeys available at regional tracks.
The issue has been growing for some time, with no pathway to see potential riders into the next phase of their careers.
Katter’s Australian Party state leader Robbie Katter told Ray Hadley the idea has previously been thwarted by bureaucrats.
“They put all this narrative around it and words and it’s short on action,” he said.
“It’s a great concept and just needs some effort from government.”
