Child rapist and killer’s parole decision delayed again

Article image for Child rapist and killer’s parole decision delayed again

The family of the little girl raped and murdered by Neville Towner will wait even longer to find out if he’ll walk free.

Towner raped and drowned four-year-old Lauren Hickson in 1989, receiving a life sentence.

But, his sentence was amended after 20 years because of ‘truth in sentencing’ changes introduced by the Greiner government.

When Towner attacked Lauren, she had been playing on a pink bike she’d been given for Christmas.

Yesterday, Lauren’s parents watched on as Towner’s parole hearing was postponed again when his psychiatrist failed to attend.

The parole hearing has already been adjourned a number of times.

The hearing will now take place on May 15, just two days before the anniversary of Lauren’s murder.

Lauren’s devastated mother, Jurina Hickson, tells Ray Hadley she wants to see changes to the system.

“Ray, I would like to see legislation brought in where child rapists and child killers to be kept in jail for the rest of their life. But I know that’s not going to happen,” she tells Ray Hadley.

Ray has slammed the Greiner government’s ‘truth in sentencing’ changes and the “horrors it brought” victims of crime.

“You can never be forgiven for truth in sentencing.”
