Child safety advocate slams paedophile register as ‘political stunt’: ‘It makes me feel sick’
A leading child protection advocate is slamming plans for a public sex offenders register as a “political stunt”.
The federal government is urging the states to get behind the idea, which would see an offender’s name, photograph, date of birth and postcode published online.
Crossbench Senator Derryn Hinch and the family of murdered schoolboy Daniel Morcombe have thrown their full support behind the proposal.
But Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston tells Natalie Peters and Erin Molan it’s an election stunt that won’t make children safer.
“This is just a promise that’s not going to materialise because politically going to be almost impossible to do it.
“And it’s done on the back of fear, a parent’s real and legitimate fear for the safety of their children.”
Ms Johnston says politicians should be creating stronger laws that stop dangerous sex offenders being released in the first place.
“It’s just stealing votes on the back of children’s safety.
“It makes me really unhappy. It makes me feel sick actually.”
