Child safety is in the spotlight this Day for Daniel honouring the memory of murdered Sunshine Coast schoolboy Daniel Morcombe while encouraging Australians to have important conversations.

More than 6000 schools and early learning centres across the country are set to take part in educational lessons and activities, which is this year themed “brave conversations”.

The Morcombes have become child safety advocates in the wake of Daniel’s death.

Australians are being encouraged to “wear red, educate and donate” this Day for Daniel.

“We believe that around 500 children around Australia will come forward and disclose some form of harm today, Daniel’s father Bruce Morcombe said.

“It is through education that we provide children with the power, confidence and tools, no matter what their age, to speak out.”

He said child sexual abuse occurs in all corners of Australia.

“It is not good enough to think that that will never happen to our family or in our local community.

“We consistently reinforce that message that if something has happened or is happening to them, they must come forward and tell somebody in their safety network.”
