A Choice spokesperson has shared her advice on businesses asking for your personal details after a strange request.

When shopping for toilet brushes the other day, Laurel was asked for her phone number and email address, all so the store could send her a receipt.

But Choice consumer data advocate Kate Bower told the team the likelihood of businesses deleting your information afterwards is slim.

“What’s more likely is you end up on their direct marketing list, which means you might see an email telling you their specials,” she said.

“Beyond that, what also might be happening is they might be using that information to start a profile on you.

“So, connecting it up with your other purchases, if you’ve got any loyalty programs with that business.

“That’s also so they can market things to you and potentially even sell that information or share that information with other businesses.”
