Cop’s warning: Fines begin very soon for motorists snapped by high-tech cameras
Motorists snapped on their phones or not wearing seatbelts by Queensland’s high-tech cameras will be fined starting from next week.
To date, the trial has only issued warning notices to drivers.
Hundreds of drivers have been caught out in the trial.
Acting Superintendent of the road policing group, Steve Donnelly, said convincing people to leave their phones alone in the car was incredibly difficult.
From November 1, drivers will cop a fine.
“No more warning, the cameras will be in use, fines will be issued,” he told Scott Emerson.
“We expect to see very similar here [as other states]. The trial numbers indicate [we] are detecting large numbers of offending, so we expect to see the same.”
The current penalty in Queensland for using a mobile phone behind the wheel is $1033 and four demerit points.
