Could Winx win the Melbourne Cup? Hugh Bowman thinks so
She’s undoubtedly one of the greatest horses in history, but could Winx have won the Melbourne Cup?
Her jockey Hugh Bowman certainly thinks so.
The Chris Waller-trained mare has won 29 consecutive races, the longest of which was over 2200 metres.
The Melbourne Cup is run over 3200 metres though, a distance many think is too far for the middle distance runner.
Speaking ahead of his ride on Marmelo on Tuesday, jockey Hugh Bowman tells Alan Winx could have won Australia’s most famous race.
“I’ve got no doubt she would Alan, had she run as a four or five-year-old.
“I don’t think she’d be winning now. She’d have a lot of weight. 65kg maybe.
“She’d have too much weight to run now and she’s never run over that distance.”
