Council insists slashing Coronation Drive lanes will ‘improve’ traffic flow
The Council is defending its decision to carve part of the road away from traffic on Coronation Drive to create a temporary bike lane.
The wreck of the Drift restaurant may not be removed from where it is beached on the Bicentennial Bikeway for up to six weeks.
It’s prompted the Brisbane City Council to make the call to convert a section of Coronation Drive into a bikeway from Monday to improve safety for cyclists.
Brisbane Public Transport Chair Ryan Murphy told Neil Breen the Bicentennial carries around three to five thousand cyclists a day.
Ryan Murphy: “That’s a very long time to have the ‘Bruce Highway’ for cyclists in Brisbane closed.”
Neil Breen: “But Coronation Drive is the ‘Bruce Highway’ for people in cars for the western suburbs.
“It’s a big call you’ve made…”
Ryan Murphy: “That’s right. Coronation Drive carries about 75,000 vehicles every day, so that’s a lot of traffic.”
Councillor Murphy said he’s confident a plan Council has devised won’t have a major impact on traffic congestion.
“In all reality, it’s going to have an improvement on traffic flow.”
