Australian stage and screen legend David Wenham has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia but admits he almost missed his invite to Canberra.

The 57-year-old, who played Johhny Spit in Gettin’ Square and brought Faramir to life in The Lord of the Rings, told Laurel, Gary & Mark he was notified “a few weeks ago”.

“An email arrived in my inbox and I must say, I was really tempted to just delete it because I thought it was spam,” he said.

“It had come from the Australian Government but I thought, ‘Oh yeah, it’s probably like one of those, “Hi mum, I’ve lost my phone” text messages’.

“But for whatever reason, I did click on it and it said I’ve been considered for an award!”
