Former Brisbane Lions skipper Dayne Zorko says the hamstring injury he sustained in the pre-season is healing but he doesn’t want to push it for Round 1.

The Lions confirmed he’s miss the opening round.

“Unfortunately it’s taking a little bit longer than what was first thought, it’s only the start of the season, we don’t need to push it at this very stage,” Zorko said on 4BC Breakfast.

With the veteran skipper stepping away from the captaincy, Harris Andrews and Lachie Neale have been named the co-captains in 2023.

He said he’s happy to be focussing on the game.

“If for whatever reason this was to be my last, I didn’t want to stay captain then all of a sudden just leave and let those guys find their feet by themselves, I want to be there to help in whatever capacity they need me for.”
