Deputy Premier’s comments ‘a slap in the face’ for state’s GPs

Doctors in Queensland are outraged after the Deputy Premier partly blamed a lack of GPs for the state’s hospital crisis.

Steven Miles claimed general practitioners are refusing to see people with respiratory systems, driving them to emergency departments.

It comes as hospitals struggle to cope with ambulance ramping and waiting times.

Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Queensland Chair Bruce Willett told Neil Breen the claims have offended hardworking doctors.

“For those that have needed care, the vast majority of that care for COVID has been provided in general practice, without any assistance from the state government,” he said.

“GPs feel like we’ve worked hard, we’ve done our bit and to actually then have these comments made by the Deputy Premier feels like a slap in the face.”
