‘Despicable criminal’: Police Commissioner says no terrorism link in CBD attack
The NSW Police Commissioner says the Sydney CBD attacker is a “despicable criminal”, rather than a terrorist.
Police say 21-year-old Mert Ney, who allegedly murdered one woman and stabbed another in the back, is believed to have a history of mental health issues.
Reports suggest he absconded from a facility in the days before the attack and witnesses were heard saying he took a load of pills.
Throughout the incident, Ney could be heard screaming “Allahu Akbar” and he was found with a USB containing material relating to other mass murders around the world.
But Police Commissioner Mick Fuller tells Macquarie Radio the attacker is a “lone actor” and a “despicable criminal”.
He adds the attack “is not currently classed as a terrorist incident” and that the man “has no links to terrorism”.
