Developing crisis among psychologists forced to turn away those seeking help
Many Australians are being turned away as psychologists are burnt out and feeling the pressure amid staggering wait times.
Data from the Australian Psychological Society shows 1 in 3 psychologists are forced to turn new clients away.
Clint Adams, the author of Lighting the Blue Flame, a book about youth depression and suicide, weighed in on the crisis on 4BC Drive.
Mr Adams, who also works as a counsellor, says for some younger Australians in the workplace, missing out on that human contact and interaction has been detrimental.
“What should happen is that if you feel like you’re in a bad place, and you get the help early enough hopefully you can kind of nip things in the bud, which is the ideal situation.”
He says wait times blowing out and with fewer psychologists, it’s a worrying situation long-term.
“Prior to the pandemic, our mental health requirements have certainly kept going up, I don’t think that as a society or a government we [do] enough in the earlier years around looking at the root causes of why people are struggling with this stuff.”
He says some psychologists are feeling burnt out, and seeking help themselves.
