Doubts cast on Schrinner’s million-dollar Story Bridge quote

The Lord Mayor is being challenged to substantiate claims the installation of two flags would cost the city millions.

A petition calling for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags to be permanently flown on the Story Bridge has amassed thousands of signatures and the Labor Party’s support.

It comes as the Brisbane City Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan, which was released in August, recommends the flying of Indigenous flags from city-owned assets.

But Adrian Schrinner says  including Brisbane’s most recognisable landmark would cost several million dollars.

“I’ve never seen the information the Lord Mayor’s relying on,” Labor leader Jared Cassidy told Spencer Howson.

“He just said that in a Council meeting, I don’t really buy that to be perfectly honest. I’d like to see where he’s getting those figures from.”
