11.41pm – UK Prime Minister congratulates Anthony Albanese 

The UK Prime Minister has become the first world leader to congratulate Anthony Albanese.

“Congratulations to Anthony Albanese on your election as Prime Minister of Australia,” Johnson said in a statement.

“Our countries have a long history and a bright future together. As thriving likeminded democracies we work every day to make the world a better, safer, greener and more prosperous place.

“As we reap the rewards of our comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, the AUKUS partnership and the unmatched closeness between the British and Australian people, we do so knowing that the only distance between us is geographical.

9.37pm – Scott Morrison ‘brought down’ by climate change, Neil Breen says 

Neil Breen believes the ‘unseen’ election issue of climate change was ultimately the Coalition’s undoing.

Speaking with the panel, he said voters were turned away from major parties on this issue.

“Climate change has yet again brought down another leader,” he said.

“It was the great unseen issue of the entire election and people voted in their droves against the major parties on the issue of climate change.”

Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce is tipping independents will decide who forms government.

“I don’t know whether the independents in inner-urban seats … want to support the socialists or whether they want to support the Coalition,” he has told the panel.

“It’s a choice for them to make.”

8.55pm – ALP candidate Madonna Jarrett claims Trevor Evans has conceded the seat of Brisbane 

Labor candidate Madonna Jarrett has claimed the LNP’s Trevor Evans has admitted defeat.

The numbers are still too close to make a call on who will claim the seat of Brisbane.


8.33pm – Ray Hadley calls in, discusses the teal wave and seats of Fowler, Dickson  

The big story for Ray Hadley tonight is the seat of Fowler, with Kristina Keneally expected to fold to independent candidate Dai Le.

“I mean, she would stop the Southern Aurora, the XPT and the old Sunlander in Queensland,” he said on the embattled Labor politician.

“She fair dinkum can’t win an election, she just can’t get across the line!”

8.25pm – Kevin Rudd receives a warm welcome as he arrives at the ALP’s Brisbane party 


8.22pm Results ‘heartening’ for ALP’s Anika Wells, hoping to hold on to seat of Lilley

Lilley MP Anika Wells has told John Stanley and Scott Emerson early numbers are “heartening”.

“We are still waiting on pre-polls to come in, given more than 40 per cent of the seat voted before today.”

8.10pm The Labor Party has a lot to celebrate at their Sydney event as the results roll in 

Labor Leader Anthony Albanese is watching the election results roll in from a private venue in Sydney.

The Opposition needs to gain seven seats to secure a majority government.


7.56pm – Peter Dutton ‘in strife’ as early numbers indicate six per cent swing for ALP 

The Defence Minister is in troubled waters as the numbers roll in, showing an early lead for ALP rival Ali France.

Dickson is one of five seats Anthony Albanese has hoped to secure in Queensland.

7.47pm – Josh Frydenberg ‘reasonably confident’ of positive outcome as ballots are counted 

3AW’s Neil Mitchell has told the panel Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is “reasonably confident” he can hold onto his seat.

“He was about 60-40 last time, he’s 65-35 this time,” he said.

“It’ll go to pre-poll and postal and he usually does pretty well on those, as I believe all conservatives do.

“I know Josh is personally confident, if he can still be awake, because he’s been exhausted.”

7.17pm – Queensland and Western Australia expected to tip the scales 

Political analysts predict Queensland and Western Australia will play a crucial role in deciding the results of the federal election.

In Queensland, the seats to watch are Lilley and the inner-city triumvirate of Brisbane, Ryan and Griffith.

In WA, Pearce, Swan, Hasluck and Curtin are key.


7.09pm – Early numbers in Longman indicate a strong United Australian Party swing 


6.43pm – The Queensland seats to watch tonight 

Politicians are in for a long night as they anxiously wait for ballots to be counted.

Here’s the seats to keep an eye on as the numbers start rolling in:


5.25pm – Long lines of voters turn out in Bulimba to decide on who will represent the seat of Griffith 

The rain hasn’t kept voters away from the polls in Bulimba amid a strong fight for the inner-city seat.

Terri Butler hopes to defend the Labor-held seat from political rivals Olivia Roberts (LNP) and Max Chandler-Mather (Greens).

She previously won the seat by a marginal 2.9 per cent in 2019.


3.56pm – Bill Shorten ‘vamping it up for the cameras’ in another democracy sausage decimation 

Former prime minister Bill Shorten has once again shown the strange way he tackles a democracy sausage.

He initially caught attention in 2016 for taking on the middle of the ‘dog first.


3.11pm – Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese speak about their love of Rugby League

The party leaders have each taken some time from their anxious election-day wait to speak with The Continuous Call Team.
