Hundreds of sick kids will be made to wait even longer to access a miracle drug after discussions to get it listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme broke down.

Discussions between the Department of Health and Vertex regarding Trikafta, a prescription medicine used to treat cystic fibrosis, for 6–11-year-olds have come to a standstill.

They’ve now been referred back to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee, even though the drug has already been recommended for that age group.

“It’s frustrating,” Ray said. “The system has now let us down.”

Cystic Fibrosis Australia boss Jo Armstrong told Ray the “unconscionable” delay will put 500 kids at a disadvantage.
