Feds signal superannuation shake-up ahead of May budget
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has pledged to legislate the purpose of superannuation for Australians to ensure they have a “dignified retirement”.
During the COVID years, Australians were able to access $10,000 of their super.
But the federal government labelled the policy a “debacle” and say the sole purpose of super was to give Australians a comfortable retirement.
AMP Capital senior economist Diana Mousina says she experts more details in the federal budget.
“We’ve been talking about these super wars for the last few years and particularly what happened during COVID because the real question is; should we be able to take money out of super, at times when we need to by a house, or take a portion of out of super or when you are in financial hardship,” she told Neil Breen.
“That was never the purpose of super initially. The last few years have been extremely different.”
She predicts early super access won’t be possible in years to come.
