FIRST INTERVIEW | Professor Coaldrake tasked with leading independent government review
The former QUT vice-chancellor tasked with investigating the Palaszczuk government’s culture and accountability, has hosed down concerns about his links to the Labor Party.
The Premier today announced an independent probe after weeks of mounting political pressure and calls for a commission of inquiry into political interference allegations and integrity issues.
Professor Peter Coaldrake will lead the probe, and addressed criticism levelled by the LNP at his appointment.
He said he wasn’t a member of the Labor Party and he has worked with both sides of politics.
He said three decades ago he was a member, when he attended two branch meetings before he decided it wasn’t for him.
The LNP has raised questions about the appointment, with Shadow Finance Minister Jarrod Bleijie describing him as a “Labor mate”.
“I think that’s for other people to judge,” he told Scott Emerson.
Professor Coaldrake says he will not be dealing with individual complaints and individual matters, and he said it wasn’t a “complaints focussed” review.
“I am looking at the system, and the links within the system, how well the system it working and those sorts of issues. I do expect to be talking to a lot of people, and the people I do talk to … will undoubtedly be identified in the back of the report.”
He said it’s a “healthy thing” for governments to look inwards.
