A foreign government is behind a recent cyber attack on Australia’s major political parties.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has revealed the attack on the Parliament House computer network was conducted by a “sophisticated state actor”.

Mr Morrison made the revelation during his address to federal parliament on Monday, saying intelligence agencies are monitoring the situation and there doesn’t appear to be any form of electoral interference.

Macquarie National News Political Editor Michael Pachi tells Chris Smith “the Liberal party, the Labor party and the National party have also had their computers hacked”.

The prime minister has refused to elaborate further on which country is behind the breach.

“Reading between the lines… you can only assume that the government is potentially referring to China there,” Pachi tells Chris Smith.
