A former Queensland police superintendent has fired up over the “exceptionally frustrating” youth crime crisis.

Jim Keogh, who was the former Gold Coast bikie taskforce top cop before his retirement, sees parallels with bikies.

“It is fixable, the situation is they removed the bail laws, the bail offences there for the juveniles,” he told Bill McDonald, filling in on Brisbane Live.

“Once upon a time if you were a juvenile, if you’re granted nail, if you breach that bail, you’re remanded in custody.”

Criminologist Terry Goldsworthy said in the past financial year has gone up 7 per cent.

He said youth offenders are massively over-represented in certain serious crimes.

“If you look within that, the rate of break and enters is up 18 per cent, the rate of stolen vehicles is up 13 per cent, the number of robberies is up 29 per cent.

“The interesting thing that stands out to me … youth offenders those from 10-17 years old, make up 16 per cent of all offenders .. but when you go and look at break and enters, stolen cars and robberies they account for more than 50 per cent of the offenders in those crime categories.”
