Foxtel boss hints at commentary lifeline for Steve Smith and Bill Lawry
Channel Nine has lost the cricket broadcasting rights with Fox Sports and Channel Seven picking them up in a joint deal worth $1.182 billion.
The announcement came just weeks after the Australian ball-tampering scandal which rocked the nation.
Both events have and will continue to have huge ramifications for media personalities and cricketers alike.
New Foxtel CEO and former Fox Sports boss Patrick Delany joins Alan Jones in the studio to discuss both issues.
“I gotta say, when I found out about what had happened, like all Australians, I thought it was almost a stain on our souls.
“What turned me is I think Australians are very good at giving people a go and redemption, especially when they cop it sweet.”
As sponsors began deserting Steve Smith, Delany contacted the Australian captain directly to check on his welfare.
Alan questioned whether Delany would go one step further and add Smith to the commentary team while he serves a 12-month playing ban.
“We will see. We will see.”
Alan, “Oh he’s a politician now, he doesn’t answer any questions?”
“Oh, you want me to just say yes.
“I tell you who will be a good commentator… if they’re a good commentator, they’re on.
“If the fans love them, they’re on. Absolutely.”
Alan, “Bill Lawry?”
“Absolutely. Got him!”
