Fury as latest Olympic build threatens to swallow historic Kangaroo Point homes
Kangaroo Point residents are furious as the government forges ahead with plans to take over the area’s only green space for Olympic infrastructure.
Workers have this week begun conducting site surveys at Raymond Park, which has been identified as the future site for warm-up facilities for athletics events at The Gabba.
While locals aren’t happy at the thought of losing their only green space for a temporary warm-up track, the stakes are even higher for other residents.
Paul from Kangaroo Point told Bill McDonald he owns one of a handful of homes that back onto the park.
“Every indication is the field is not big enough for the track and the associated buildings that have to go with it,” he said on 4BC Summer Mornings.
“Therefore, as we see it, and all the locals see it, they’re going to resume the houses – there are eight houses here – all for a temporary event.
“We’re looking at losing this house for a temporary event. Our house will be gone forever for a temporary event.”
Attempts to contact the state government for some assurance the properties won’t be touched have been in vain, Paul said.
“We’ve heard about this now for well over a year; the consultation has been pathetic, there’s been no effort at all, we’ve been writing letters to the government, asking questions.
“Not only do they not answer questions, they don’t even reply to your emails.”
