Gold Coast council green lights controversial Main Beach development

Gold Coast City Council has approved a 20-storey tower at Main Beach, despite protests from locals who argue it will destroy the beachfront ambience.

Ray Hadley, who owns an apartment nearby that will not be affected, says it’s a” bizarre decision”.

It’s 250 per cent larger than the permitted site limit.

Councillor Gary Baildon who spoken out strongly against the project tells Ray his “biggest issue is setbacks; the distance between buildings”.

“In Main Beach, as you would well know, we’ve got very, very large blocks with very high rise buildings and it works very well because there’s all the land around it.

“But in this particular [approval] they can just about shake hands with the people next door.

“Now that in my mind blocks out all of the sunshine, blocks the amenities for people and it’s just an undesirable development.”
