The state Education Minister is seeing red over a federal government proposal to increase entry requirements for teaching degrees.

Currently, teaching students are required to complete a literacy and numeracy test, called LANTITE, prior to graduating university.

Acting federal education minister Stuart Robert plans to bring LANTITE forward to the beginning of the degree, claiming the extra entry barrier would improve the quality of teachers.

However, the move would need every teaching minister across the country on board and it’s already met resistance.

“There was no evidence whatsoever when this was presented to us … that this has turned out any better teachers,” Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace told Sofie Formica.

“I don’t want to necessarily go in and change something as a barrier to enter a profession that we’re struggling to get people into, … which is not necessarily going to achieve a greater outcome.

“Whether or not putting this at the front rather than at the end is going to make any difference to that, with all due respect Sofie, I don’t think we’ve got the evidence for that!”

She argued a school-leaver’s ATAR score should be enough evidence of their ability to complete a teaching degree.

“If we’re going to make changes, let’s not shoot from the hip pocket, let’s just make sure we’ve got all the evidence in place so whatever we do, it’s for the betterment of our kids.”
