GWS Giants star: ‘I cried all night when Kevin Sheedy delivered the news’
The Greater Western Sydney Giants are going from strength to strength in recent years.
A group of young kids with potential has now developed into a hardened squad of AFL veterans, pushing for their first premiership flag.
Two of those founding players Dylan Shiel and co-captain Phil Davis joined Alan in the studio to discuss their meteoric rise.
Davis vividly recalls the moment it all almost came to an end back in 2014 after copping an innocuous knee to the back.
“I thought I was going to have to retire.
“They told me I was 50-50 to lose my kidney and I’d already made my mind up that I was going to retire.
“To wake up after that second surgery and still have both kidneys was one of the biggest reliefs of my life.”
Dylan tells Alan it was his first roommate, Alex Carey, that helped forge his career at the Giants.
The two were paired together and became inseparable until Carey was cut from the club.
“I cried all night when Kevin Sheedy delivered the news that he wasn’t going to get a contract.”
Carey gave AFL away and started playing cricket, remarkably becoming Australia’s second in line wicketkeeper.
“We did make a promise to each other a couple of years ago that I wanted some merchandise if he goes and represents the baggy green and I’d do the same if I made the All-Australian team in the AFL,” Shiel says.
“Fortunately, I’ve held up my end of the bargain and it looks like he’s about to do his part as well so it looks like we’re going to deliver on our promise.”
