Health Minister lands ‘baffling’ backflip in less than a week
A Commission of Inquiry will probe DNA testing in Queensland after what Neil Breen describes as a “baffling” change of mind by the state government.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk yesterday announced a six-month probe into the state laboratory after police were told for several years crime scenes didn’t have enough DNA evidence to be tested.
Neil Breen says while it was a necessary measure, it was bizarre to see the announcement made less than a week after it was canned by the Health Minister.
“Only seven days ago today, only seven days ago, here is an angry Yvette D’Ath blaming calls for an inquiry … on the LNP and politicking,” he said.
The Health Minister last week suggested a Commission of Inquiry would be nothing more than a ‘duplication’ of a re-examination already being conducted by police.
“The government only reacts when they get a Bunsen burner put under them and in this case, it was Hedley Thomas from The Australian.
“All of a sudden, from no benefit, duplication, unnecessary, politicking, totally unwarranted, not needed, seven days on, we’ve got a Commission of Inquiry.”
