There are warnings parts of France are facing a “heat apocalypse” as extreme temperatures continue to suffocate much of Europe.

Temperatures could reach record levels in 15 regions of the southwest, where wildfires are forcing thousands to evacuate their homes and towns.

Parts of the UK have also recorded their hottest day ever amid warnings the worst is yet to come.

The nation’s weather bureau has issued a “red extreme heat warning” for the next two days for many parts of England.

UK correspondent Brett McLeod told Laurel, Gary and Mark temperatures are so extreme, it’s expected many people will die as a result.

“The trouble is there’s not the infrastructure,” he said. “A lot of homes, a lot of schools and hospitals don’t have any air-conditioning at all.

“There’s no escape from the heat and again, we’ve grown up in a country where you learn to deal with the heat.

“It’s not the same [in England] and it could be a very difficult day tomorrow.”
