The Home Affairs Minister has assured Australia will endeavour to continue Afghanistan evacuations for as long as possible.

Four Australian flights evacuated a further 750 people from Afghanistan overnight, to bring the total to around 2,450 people, she says.

Minister Karen Andrews told Neil Breen the evacuations are “in excess of what we ever thought we would have been able to have managed over a week”.

US President Joe Biden has confirmed all remaining American troops will be pulled out of Afghanistan by August 31, ceasing evacuation efforts.

Ms Andrews didn’t give a similar deadline for Australian troops, but said they will continue work on the ground for “as long as we can”.

“But the situation in Afghanistan and particularly Kabul is deteriorating hour by hour.”
