Housing Minister admits law loophole

Article image for Housing Minister admits law loophole

Housing Minister, Meaghan Scanlon, has admitted a law change aimed at helping renters, has done more harm than good.

The law, which was passed earlier in the year, aimed to limit rent increases to once per year.

The Housing Minister announced on Twitter, “Reports have emerged of some landlords and agents ending leases with tenants in order to increase rents more frequently than once per year.”

CEO of REIQ, Antonia Mercorella told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, “I think what’s important to understand about this particular legislative reform, is that it was retrospective in nature.”
