Despite being hit by floods in February, Logan City Council has managed to keep rates among the lowest in south-east Queensland.

Ratepayers will face a minimum 2.49 per cent rates increase from July.

In Brisbane, homeowners were slugged 4.9 per cent, while on the Gold Coast, rates will rise 4.3 per cent.

Logan mayor mayor Darren Power says while they are spending more this year, including more local club houses for sporting groups, they want to keep costs low.

“We are recycling mattresses now,” he told Neil Breen.

“Every year we get 10,000 mattresses in our tip.

“There’s a lot of steel in those mattresses, 10 kilos of steel, so we are going to recycle those and save ourselves one cubic square metre each mattress.”
