Comedian Mel Buttle says on stage she’s learned to read the audience and go through a “rolodex” of jokes and funny stories in her head, depending on what they’re responding to.

She told Sofie Formica she goes in with a “plan a” or a dream scenario, but she likes to see what the crowd responds to.

“What happens is each audience kind of adds their own spin on the show, and maybe I’ve got five jokes a night about my dog, and the audience just don’t care … so on the fly I go through a rolodex of ideas in my head and I think what else might these people like,” she explained.

Next year she’s performing at the Brisbane Comedy Festival.

She also spoke about her character Lynn and how she was born out of boredom, based on the every mum character!
