How Tabcorp lobbied the Qld government for $30 million tax boon
A gambling company has successfully lobbied the state government for higher taxes on competition.
Queensland has become the first state to raise point of consumption taxes to 20 per cent in what will be a blow to corporate bookmakers.
Responsible Wagering Australia said the changes would “unfairly entrench the monopoly enjoyed by established and land-based wagering service providers at the expense of the new and emerging online industry”.
Meanwhile, Tabcorp will benefit from an expected reduction in other fees and taxes that would hand the company $30 million annually.
“Unfortunately for corporate bookies, no one’s going to cry for a bookie,” Neil Breen said. “But the way this deal came about is the real story.”
Senior Nine News reporter Tim Arvier said Tabcorp hired lobby group ANACTA Strategies to strike a favorable deal.
“I can tell you that ANACTA Strategies met with government officials, including the Premier’s, Treasurer’s and Racing Minister’s offices 43 times on behalf of Tabcorp,” he told Neil.
“By March, they were meeting almost weekly with the Chief of Staff from the Racing Minister’s office.”
Meanwhile, corporate bookmakers didn’t get a single consultation.
