How the cruise line industry will draw on international examples
International cruises will be able to set sail this year from Australian shores for the first time in nearly two years.
The federal government has today announced it will not renew the ban on international cruise ships arriving and departing from Australian ports.
Passengers must be double vaccinated and there will be improved reporting of COVID cases on board.
CEO of the Australian Cruise Association, Jill Abel, says it’s a big step forward, but there’s work to be done.
“The work is definitely being done progressing towards some winter cruising up in the top end, in that expedition style and towards the end of May through the eastern seaboard,” she told Scott Emerson.
She says a lot of the criteria for passengers is still to be nutted out.
There could be testing requirements and conversations around mask-wearing, she says.
“There’s a lot of examples out of Europe and the US, I think there’s nearly close to 9 million people who have been cruising in the last 2 years somewhere in the world.”
