How venom from deadly snakes could be used to save lives
The venom from Australia’s deadly eastern brown and scaled viper snakes could soon be used in combat zones to stop uncontrolled bleeding.
Researchers from the University of Queensland are working on a liquid gel using venom from the snakes that would seal wounds while a patient is being taken to hospital.
They discovered a protein in the venom could be used as an accelerant in the body’s natural blood-clotting process.
It’s hoped it could be sold in pharmacies or used in military operations.
“Current products to control bleeding aren’t good enough,” Dr Amanda Kijas said.
“And we have a product that we think can really change those outcomes, and control bleeding really rapidly and potently and in that really early phase after injury before these patients get to hospital where many people are currently dying.”
