Huge half-pipe development derailed by creepy critter
A $1-million half-pipe project for Australia’s winter athletes has been derailed by a lizard.
The Winter Olympics in South Korea has wrapped up, with Australia claiming two silver medals and one bronze.
Following the games, the focus has shifted to Australia’s lacking facilities and funding for our Winter athletes.
It’s come to light the Federal Government pledged $1-million to build a snowboard half-pipe at Perisher over five years ago.
The huge project was derailed by a 10cm lizard, with lobbyists saying the proposed site interrupted the Guthega skink’s migration path.
Macquarie Radio’s James Willis tells Chris Smith more.
“Perisher was all for the idea.
“This wouldn’t just have been for training. It would have allowed people like Shaun White, the biggest names in the world, to come and take part in international events.
“What will happen is that money will go to another sport. It’s terrible.”
