‘I’m not their cup of tea’: Campbell Newman on his tough sell to Qld
Campbell Newman admits he’s facing an uphill battle to win Queensland’s sixth senate seat on May 21.
The former lord mayor and premier says the Coalition government’s management prompted him to end his seven-year hiatus from politics.
“[They say] they support small business but have piled on red tape and bureaucracy and through COVID, haven’t stood up for freedom and people’s rights,” he told Neil Breen.
But Mr Newman acknowledges winning votes with the Liberal Democrats, similar to much of his political career, will be a “dogfight”.
“I’m saying to the people of Queensland look: you’ve got a guy who you might not like – okay, let’s not beat around the bush – there’s people out there [for whom] I’m not their cup of tea.
“But one thing I think that most people can agree on is that I’m a terrier, I get things done.
“I’m standing, I’m offering to serve.”
