Residents in Darwin were awoken by the tremors of an earthquake early this morning.

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia but was felt more than 600 kilometres away in the Northern Territory.

9News Darwin chief of staff Kathleen Gazzola told Luke Bradnam on 4BC Summer Breakfast it’s the strongest shake she’s ever felt.

“This one really ramped up and was giving a good shake for well over a minute,” she said.

“It got a little bit scary there for a bit, we weren’t sure when it was going to stop! I even contemplated grabbing my baby and heading outside of the house.

“I do know that there were people in the CBD, in high rises were terrified.”
