Industry vows to drop sugar in soft drinks but size may suffer
Soft drinks may be reduced in size as part of a plan to cut down on sugar in beverages.
Amid calls for a tax on sugar, the beverages industry is pledging to reduce the amount of sugar in drinks by 20% by 2025.
CEO of the Australian Beverages Council Geoff Parker says companies will have to determine how they adapt to the change.
“Different companies will use different strategies to achieve the target,” he tells Deborah Knight.
“It could be reformulation of existing recipes… it could be smaller pack sizes.”
Mr Parker says the government’s hesitance to back a tax on sugar is well founded.
“There’s no evidence from anywhere in the world that these types of discriminatory taxes have any discernable impact in public health.”
