The Treasurer is being warned to be prudent in next week’s federal budget, despite a temporary windfall in tax revenue.

The budget bottom-line has received a $14 billion boost which could help the Coalition fund its personal income tax cuts.

But Deloitte chief economist Chris Richardson tells Ross Greenwood the government’s focus should be on returning the budget to surplus.

“It is raining revenue here in Canberra,” he says.

“I would close that deficit faster, it’s not really paying down the debt, it’s simply slowing the pace at which the debt is growing.”
