‘It just makes sense’: Rental granny flat solution gets green light
Homeowners will be encouraged to rent their granny flats out for three years under emergency planning changes by the state government.
The amendment was suggested by stakeholders at a pre-housing summit roundtable last week as the south-east grabbles with a housing crisis.
“It just makes sense to allow existing accommodation to be occupied by someone other than a relative to provide more affordable accommodation,” Deputy Premier Steven Miles said.
“It also allows homeowners to earn rent, helping them meet the increased cost of living.”
Homeowners are restricted from renting out a secondary dwelling on their properties under current planning regulations.
Dr Miles said the changes will be reviewed after the three-year period is up to ensure there are “no unintended consequences”.
