‘I’ve had broken arms, I’ve had broken ribs’: Domestic violence victims speak out
The horrific double murder of two children in Sydney’s north-west has shocked the nation.
The heinous crime came after several years of custody battles with the children’s 36-year-old mother.
There’s since been an outpouring of grief from Australians who have had enough of the growing spate of domestic violence incidents.
It prompted two extremely brave but harrowing calls from domestic violence victims, Margaret and Dianne.
They tell Mark Levy just how hard it is to escape abuse.
“It’s not so easy to go and get help, especially when your children are threatened all the time,” Margaret says.
“I’ve had broken arms, I’ve had broken ribs, I’ve had black eyes.
“And when I went to the doctor I’d have to say I fell over, which was a lie, just to protect my kids.
“I used to pray every night he’d die, that’s how bad it was.”

Dianne followed up with her own emotional recollection of the horrors of domestic violence.
“It’s not easy.
“My problem was my ex-husband cut me off from everyone… from family, from friends, so that you have no support.
“Then they control you financially as well as physically. ‘If you don’t do what you’re told I’ll kill you, I’ll kill the children. You’ll never get custody of the children.’
“So this is what you were threatened with most of your life.
